For many years, Eddie Carroll's was the first face you saw when you drove in the pit gate at Thunder Road. Ed was
affectionately thought of as the Street Stock division's "den mother", and was well-liked by almost everybody. Eddie
was the short man with the little grin and the ACT headset, the guy barking numbers scribbled on a little note pad, the
guy that always leaned up against someone's fender while he smoked a cigarette.
When he succumbed to injuries suffered after a hunter's stray bullet came through the wall of his house, ACT created
the Ed Carroll Memorial Street Stock Sportsmanship Award to honor the man that brightened the days of so many. The award
instantly became the most respected prize in the history of the Street Stock division, and rightly so.
I feel fortunate to personally know all the past winners of this award, and I know that each of them has been humbled
by the honor of earning enough of their competitors' respect and support to be named the winner of the sportsmanship trophy.
One of the greatest honors I've had in my lifetime was presenting the Ed Carroll Award to Mike Martin on Jan. 12, 2008.
I hope I've made him proud.
Rest in peace, Eddie Carroll.
