Rain moved in during a red-flag cleanup for a nine-car crash, delaying the event.  Due to conflicting schedules in the ACT and ASA championship series, as well as PIR's commitment to run a CART Indy Car event the following week, the SCC race was officially cancelled.  Track owner Roger Penske wrote a $600 check to each team in attendance as a show of thanks for the support.  The SCC event was to be the very first race held on the brand-new, five-turn, 1-mile speedway.

At the time of the crash, Beaver Dragon was leading second-place driver, former Indianapolis 500 winner Danny Sullivan.  Sullivan was turned around by Mike Eddy, setting off a chain reaction crash that blocked the track.  Involved in the accident were the cars of Sullivan, Eddy, Steve Grissom, Robbie Crouch, Jamie Aube, Tom Harrington, Gardiner Leavitt, Barney McRae, Ralph Nason.  Only five cars in the race were not involved.
